What affects the price of a programmer and of programming services?

2022-05-20

Factors affecting the programmer price

Why do IC programmers vary so much in price? Several factors explain the differences on the market.

1. Programming speed — this matters a great deal.

2. How many IC types are supported — generally, a programmer supporting more chip types is the better choice.

3. Stability — Chinese programmers have become increasingly reliable. MaxWiz programmers, for example, are very stable and hold a large market share.

4. Brand — well-known IC programmer makers have usually been proven in the market, so their quality is relatively good. MaxWiz programmers are a good choice in terms of both quality and brand.

5. Whether the vendor can develop consumables such as programming sockets and keep adding IC support — as chip types are updated, older sockets no longer fit, so the programmer maker must develop new ones.

6. After-sales service — programmers are specialised equipment with many consumable parts and a wide variety of possible issues, so support matters. MaxWiz provides professional technical support and after-sales service.

7. Match the programmer to your needs — the capacity of the chips to program, the quantity and your budget. For large, stable volume production we recommend an automated programmer.

Now you know what affects the price of an IC programmer. MaxWiz programmers are stable and fairly priced — contact us if you would like to know more.

Factors affecting IC programming service fees

Many programming houses now offer IC programming services. What determines the cost?

First, the IC part number: whether it is a standard or non-standard device, and whether it is BGA, QFN or SOP.

Chips with many fine-pitch pins and difficult contact points cost more to program. SOP-type devices with fewer pins are relatively cheaper.

The type of IC is a major factor: SPI Flash is very common and therefore cheap to program, while MCUs or CPLDs may cost more.

Capacity is the next factor. Some ICs now reach 64 Gbit; navigation devices containing map data may use 4 GB or 8 GB, and programming such chips takes much longer. Longer time raises equipment cost, so the price is higher; chips that program quickly are cheaper.

Whether the IC is standard also matters. Rarely programmed MCUs have few programmer resources and expensive consumables, so the price is higher.

Volume is another factor: a handful of samples naturally costs more per unit. For large, steady volumes we can sign an agreement or a long-term cooperation and offer much better pricing.

The last factor is marking. Automated programming often has to apply different colour marks, which takes extra effort and can raise the price. EMMC devices are relatively expensive to program because of their large capacity, while TSOP and SOP devices are standard and therefore easier and cheaper.

MaxWiz provides IC programming services and runs several automated programming machines in our workshop, with ample capacity. Please contact us.
